Simple & Safe Upgrading joomla 1.5...

First Solution : Simple & Safe Upgrading joomla 1.5

UPDATE YOUR JOOMLA WITH ONE CLICK!

What is Magic Updater Pro?
Magic Updater Pro is a software that provides you with the ability to automatically update your joomla sites easily. It consists of a component and an optional plugin which adds more features to the software.

Magic Updater Pro component is used to update your joomla sites manually. The updates are fetched from Realtyna Server which contains the latest versions and updates of joomla. Due to this issue

we need to limit the use of our commercial component to domains or IPs in two different licenses named Silver and Gold. You can also add urls to your custom zipped files of joomla which is suitable

for professional users.
Magic Updater Pro plugin is used for automatic update of your joomla sites. You can also give your email address to the plugin and enable it to alert you if a new version of joomla is released or even

to automatically update your site if new version is released.

Second Solution : Risky Upgrading joomla 1.5

It is risky to upgrade a live site without testing the upgrade process first. So before upgrading the live site you need to set up a test site which is as close as possible to the configuration of your live

site, then test the upgrade on that. When you are happy with the process you can apply it to the live site (having taken a fresh backup of the live site first, of course).

Review the release notes for the new version. When upgrading from a version that is not the most recent, review release notes for the prior releases.
Step 1: Download the upgrade file

To download the most recent patch package and to obtain the MD5 hash:

* Proceed to the Joomla Download page.
* Locate the row that matches your current installation version.
* On that row, select the patch package (zip, tar.gz and tar.bz2) that is most convenient for you.
* Verify the download using the MD5 hash listed in the right column on the same line as the package you selected.

To find the MD5 hash:

1. On the Joomla Download page, click on “Download other Joomla 1.5.x packages”
2. Click on the bold text in ‘Release Name’ column. For example, if you want to find the hash for 1.5.9 to 1.5.10 patch, click on ‘Joomla1.5.10updates’.
3. On the next screen click on the ‘Files’ tab, where you will see the hash for each package.

If you have questions about these instructions, read the Additional Information below this table.
Step 2: Backup your site

Before you actually upgrade, you really should make a backup of your site. Backup your existing Joomla site files and store all the files and database in case something gets messed up, you wont

have any problem reverting back.

All upgrades should be first tested on a copy of your site before being applied to a live site.
Step 3: Install the upgrade file

There are different ways of installing a package file depending on your particular circumstances. If you have difficulty with one of these methods, then simply try another.

* Alternative 1: Unpack the package file on your local computer then use an FTP client to upload them to your site.

* Alternative 2: Use an FTP client to upload the package to your site, then use a terminal session (eg. SSH) to connect to your site and unpack the files there.

* Alternative 3: If your hosting provider gives you access to your site via some sort of web control panel like CPanel or Plesk, you can use the control panel file manager to upload the package, then

use a terminal session (which might also be available via the control panel) to unpack the package file and overwrite all changed files on the server.

Step 4: Check your live site to make sure it is working correctly

Don’t assume that the upgrade will work flawlessly just because the test upgrade worked. Check to make sure that nothing untoward has happened. It could be that differences between the live site

and test site platforms will bring out a problem that you did not notice during testing. If you find a problem and it cannot be resolved quickly you might have to rollback the upgrade using the backup

copy you created in step 2.

What is Joomla!

Joomla is an award-winning content management system (CMS), which enables you to build Web sites and powerful online applications. Many aspects, including its ease-of-use and extensibility, have made Joomla the most popular Web site software available. Best of all, Joomla is an open source solution that is freely available to everyone.

Content management system

A content management system is software that keeps track of every piece of content on your Web site, much like your local public library keeps track of books and stores them. Content can be simple text, photos, music, video, documents, or just about anything you can think of. A major advantage of using a CMS is that it requires almost no technical skill or knowledge to manage. Since the CMS manages all your content, you don’t have to.

Advantages:

There are several advantages if you choose Joomla as your framework and CMS – a few of them are outlined below:

Low cost of ownership – if you are looking for something simple and sweet with a good turn around time, Joomla is the choice for you and the costs will reduce drastically. Extensive use of add-ons – Either free or paid, Joomla inherently provides the use of extensions – which are blocks of code or modules which can be easily plugged in the system. Joomla has a huge extension directly that provides almost all of it what you can think off. A full list of such extensions can be found at http://extensions.joomla.org/ Strong community base – Joomla by far has one of the largest online community of Joomla lovers, contributors and users who help in testing and validating the builds that are created. Modular and easy to use – Joomla by virtue of its structure is extremely modular at core – making it very simple to use and basically acts like a plug and play system. SEO for Joomla – How to configure using sh40...

I have seen a lot of people ask for instructions on how to setup and configure sh404SEF for their Joomla website. So here it is, my step by step guide to configure Joomla for SEO.
The article assumes that you already have a Joomla website setup and are familiar with how to install and configure extensions in Joomla.
sh404SEF is a must have component for any Joomla site, it is essential to create Search Engine Friendly urls which are very important for anyone wanting to get into Google,Yahoo or any of the other similar search engines.

Installation

Installation of this component is pretty straight forward, go to the install/uninstall page and install the sh404SEF package.

Joomla native SEO Configuration

Before configuring sh404SEF, the native SEO settings of Joomla need to be turned on. You can do this in the Global Configurations page on the top right corner.

If you are using a .htaccess file, you can turn on the mod-rewrite option as well. The easiest way to use the .htaccess file is to rename the htaccess.txt file that is provided with the default Joomla installation.
Once you have the SEO settings turned on you can test your urls and see if they look better. Although the SEO feature in Joomla makes the urls pretty, it still lacks a long ways as to how the urls should look like for search engines to pick them up.

That’s where the url re-writing components come into picture. One such component is the sh404sef by siliana. It’s the component I use for all my clients and my sites as well and its worked pretty good so far. And the best part is it free!! It has a lot of configuration settings to customize how the urls come out and did I mention its free!

sh404SEF Configuration for Joomla

When installed the component is disabled and once configured, its needs to be enabled. When you click on the sh404SEF menu item on the Component drop down list and you should get to this page.

The default display shows only basic settings, click on the Switch to extended display.

Click on the sh404SEF Configuration button and this page comes up.

Enable it by clicking on the On radio button and select all or whatever categories you want the url re-writing to be done as shown above.
In the Advanced tab, select the Rewriting mode for your site and save.

The component will ask if its ok to clear the cache. It will wipe out all the existing rewritten urls. Click on OK.

There you go, you can test your site with pretty urls now.

The best way to have all the urls re-written is to create a sitemap for the site and best way to do it is to go to http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/. You can create a sitemap for your site for up to 500 pages.

Good luck with your website and hope you have fun. Please comment and let me know if this helped you or if you have something added to the article.

How to SEO a Joomla site using sh404SEF for Joomla...

sh404SEF facilitates URL renaming and redirection with or with an .htaccess file. It also provides you with per page fields for entering custom titles and meta information. In this article we’ll cover installation, configuration and implementation of the sh404SEF component.

Installation:

Before you install any components, I highly recommend backing up your site, and your database. You’ll be overwriting core files during the installation, and it’s critical to be able to restore your site if something goes wrong.

Download the component from the sh404SEF site. Make sure you’re downloading the right version to correspond with the version of Joomla you have.

To install the component in Joomla 1.5, use the top menu to browse to ‘Extensions’ then ‘Install/Uninstall’. In Joomla 1.0.x, use the top menu to browse to ‘Installers’ then ‘Components’. Use the file uploader to browse for the compressed file on your desktop, and load the component.

Configuration:

Once you’ve installed the component, there are a few global settings in Joomla you’ll need to do to get it working.

In the top menu choose ‘Site’ then ‘Global Configuration’. In ‘Global Configuration’ select the SEO tab. Change the item that says ‘Search Engine Friendly Pages’ from ‘no’ to ‘yes’ (ignore the alert that pops up). Then locate and change the item that says Dynamic Page Titles from ‘no’ to ‘yes’.

Next, locate the Metadata Tab. From here you can control the meta:title and the meta:author tag. Neither of these tags are valuable for SEO, so it’s recommended to set them to say ‘no’.

Configuring sh404SEF

One thing I like about sh404SEF is that it works with or without an .htaccess file. If you choose not to use the .htaccess method, you’ll have to deal with your pages starting with index.php/.

First, enable the component. Browse to the sh404SEF configuration screen via the top ‘components’ menu. Activate the component by changing the item that says ‘Enabled’ to ‘yes’. Then move onto ‘META/SEO’. You’ll be provided with some instructions to activate the meta:information tags. Browse to the sh404SEF Custom tags module and follow the instructions. I publish it in the ‘debug’ position with the ’show titles’ option set to ‘no’.

Implementation

I recommended working in advanced mode while using sh404SEF. You’ll need it to add all of the meta information and manage custom redirects.

sh404SEF will create URLs as it crawls your site. These can be found in ‘View SEF URLs’. Browse through the links that have been created, naming them to the search engine friendly URLs.

Once you’ve completed, add titles and meta information to each page by browsing to ‘Meta Tags Management’. Click on ‘Create New Meta’. Enter the page name followed by the meta information you want on that page.

sh404SEF supports aliases, a feature that allows you to list known duplicates of certain pages. When you become aware of duplicate pages on your site you can manage them really effectively using the alias function.

You can also back up your URLs. To do this from the main sh404SEF area click on ‘View Custom Redirects’ and select the ‘export’ function.

Summary

sh404SEF is a powerful tool for managing URLs and on page SEO strategies. It is a little more complex in set up and configuration than other components and solutions but it’s quite easy to use once it’s installed and you can’t beat the free price tag. How to SEO a Joomla site using the Artio JoomSEF f...

Licensing:

Artio provides multiple licensing options. You can have free, pay-per-site or server licenses. The free versions have all the same functionality as the paid versions, but with caveats ranging from third party links in the source code (Joomla 1.0.x) to a ‘pay for support’ model in Joomla 1.5.

Installation:

Before you install any components, I highly recommend backing up your site, and your database. You’ll be overwriting core files during the installation, and it’s critical to be able to restore your site if something goes wrong.

Download the component from the Artio site.

Use the file uploader to browse for the zip file on your desktop, and load the component.

Configuration:

Once you’ve installed the component, there are a few global settings in Joomla you’ll need to do to get it working.

First, connect to your webserver using an FTP client such as FileZilla or FlashFXP. Browse to the public_html folder and find the file called htaccess.txt. Download this file, open it in notepad and make the edits as instructed. When you’re done, save it as .htaccess. Then upload it back to the webserver again.

If you were able to upload the files successfully, you can close your FTP client and

In the top menu choose ‘Site’ then ‘Global Configuration’. In ‘Global Configuration’ select the SEO tab. Change the item that says ‘Search Engine Friendly Pages’ from ‘no’ to ‘yes’ (ignore the alert that pops up). The locate and change the item that says Dynamic Page Titles from ‘no’ to ‘yes’.

Next, locate the Metadata Tab. From here you can control the meta:title and the meta:author tag. Neither of these tags are valuable for SEO, so it’s recommended to set them to say “NO”

Configuring Artio JoomSEF

Locate the component in the components section of the top menu. Select Artio SEF to be taken to the configuration screen. In the configuration section, there are a lot of items for customizing Artio. Most of these options should be left to their default setting with the exception of the following three, which will need to be changed.

First, enable the component by changing the item that says ‘Enabled’ to ‘yes’. The next item says “Disable Creation of new SEF URLs?”. For the moment, this should be set to ‘yes’, it can easily be changed later. The third setting to alter is the item that says “Redirect non SEF URLs to SEF?” which should also be set to ‘yes’. Once this is all done, I recommend that you purge SEF URLs, and clear the cache (both options are available from the Artio component main page).

You’ll also have to publish the meta tag module, go into your module management area and find the JoomSEF Metabot. Publish it, it doesn’t matter where. Open the module and configure the settings to suit your SEO strategy.

Implementation

Now you’re ready to start rewriting URLs and optimizing your site. It’s a good idea to back up your site again before you get started. Once you’ve backed up, jump into Artio by selecting it from the components menu. In the configuration screen, set to ‘no’. To generate some URLs to work on, open your site in a new window and browse through a few pages. I usually set “Disable Creation of new SEF URLs?” to ‘yes’ at this point so I don’t end up with more content than I can manage in one go.

Browse through the URLs, renaming the pages and setting the meta:fields. Every time you finish one of these, you’ll be prompted to save the record to the permanent redirection table. You should always say ‘yes’ to this. To handle the home page, open index.php and leave the entry for the page name blank.

When you’re finished, go back to the main Artio area and click on ‘View/Edit Custom Redirects’. Make sure all of your custom URLs are listed here, then back them up using the ‘export’ function. When you’ve finished, select ‘Purge SEF URLs’ from the main menu and ‘Clean Cache’ in the upper right.

Summary

Artio JoomSEF is a versatile, powerful tool for managing URLs and on page SEO strategies. While it’s possibly too powerful for the average small business site, it’s been a great solution for expansive sites with a lot of dynamically generated content. Make Search Engines Love your Joomla Site...

The source code for the Joomla Content Management System is by default incapable of providing a search engine friendly environment. What this basically means is that when any web address that appears in a template created using Joomla code will not be displayed with friendly web links. When these links are not displayed, then it makes it harder for the content to be recognized by the search engines.

There are several tutorials that can help to make search engines love your Joomla site. There are also several steps you can take to make sure that unrestricted line addresses used by meta tags are recognized. A SEF Advance program is a search engine component that is friendly with URL coding, and through various steps that rename files and alter configuration settings, the search engine will pay more attention to the information in the meta tag blocks on templates created with Joomla.

There are a number of factors that keep search engines from recognizing Joomla templates and many of these are the type of symbols that are used with the cascading style sheets, HTML codes, or even in the actual content of the web page. The search engine optimization process is affected by bold and italics, meta tags descriptions, keyword density, the domain name and the web page design.

Joomla Content Management System is comprised of a basic program and numerous extensions that can be further developed by any one with a basic word processing background. The Joomla Content Management System also has a built-in function that improves search engine friendly features considerably.

There have been some problems with being able to control of the parameters of the URL when it is submitted to a search engine. The present ranking of Joomla on Google is favorable because this content management system is one of the top software programs that does allow people to expand on the basic code that is open sourced for the entire world to enjoy at their own pace.

Using all of the tools and various resources that are totally devoted to increasing search engine recognition might come down to what operating budget a business has to work with. Whatever the cost, many of these search engine optimization tools will pay off well when the search engines are better able to bring customers to websites that were designed with the Joomla templates.

Joomla templates have been used for Government applications, small business websites and by non-profit organizations with quite a bit of success. The strict code standards that have outlined by the W3C have also helped with optimizing the recognition of Joomla web page templates by search engines. Any web content that is arranged in a smooth manner will be well received by a search engine tool.

The search engine friendly source tools are available free on many websites throughout the internet, and people can locate them by using carefully selected search words. With these search engines tools in place, developers will be able to hone their keywords to where they will fare better in being recognized by any number of search engines that you might choose to use on the internet.

Making Minisites With Joomla Cms...

While almost everyone has heard of minisites by now if you know anything about internet marketing, very few people have considered using an open source and free CMS or content managment system, like Mambo or Joomla, which is based on Mambo code, to produce minisites.

What are the advantages of using a CMS like Joomla to rapidly make and deploy minisites on the internet?

1. Joomla is easy to use and you can use thousands of free CSS based templates that support the latest standards and have a site up in hours, not days.

2. Joomla support easy wysiwyg or what you see is what you get visual editors that allow you to set up and add content to a site as easily as using a word processor on your desktop computer. What this means is that your site supports the latest web 2.0 standards and can grow in content easily and quickly without redeveloping your website from scratch.

3. Joomla has thousands of extensions and you can easily produce websites that rival sites costing tens of thousands of dollars for nothing. You can easily add membership sites, photo galleries, streaming video, audio, chat, and forums as well as rich blogs. In short, everything to make your site “sticky” and keep bringing back those visitors over and over again.

4. Joomla makes changing the look of your site a snap, since you can change your template and quickly change the look and feel of your website in just minutes, allowing you to freshen up your site every once in a while.

5. Joomla is continuously updated and is now releasing a beta version called 1.5. Most people are still working on 1.03 or so, but it is nice to know that future upgrades are available.

6. Joomla is well supported by many Hosting services now, and is able to be installed by Fantastico scripts with just one click. There is a user manual and several video packages that show you how to make templates and set up membership sites for profit.

7. Joomla and most of it’s extensions or add ons are free and open source so it is cheap to get a very professional web presence on the internet.

For all the advantages, it will take a few weeks to get used to the new methodology of using a CMS to manage and deploy your websites unless you are used to making websites from your browser. Once you get the hang of it however, you never want to go back to the slow laborious system of desktop website creation and uploading.

I recommend you go to one of the sites called Joomlatutorials.com and go through the tutorials right after installing Joomla and before you do any work on your own site. Basically, you start with a template that you get for free at the largest free site template repository called www.joomla24.com. They have over 1,500 free templates you can start with. Alternatively, you can go with one of the many commercial template companies that offer a variety of paid templates that you can modify and make into your site.

Once you select the template, you must change the permissions on your template and media areas of your template section in Joomla under your public html directory so that you can make changes to the appropriate template and files.

You do this either within joomla or most often, from cpanel using your file manager functions and set the file permissions to 777 for the folders and 666 for files.

You must get a log in from your hosting company after installation so that you can go into the administrators section that you manage and build the site from and make changes and add content to the site.

After you log in, you go to the templates section in the site manager and click on new.

Then you are presented with a dialog that asks you to browse on your computer and pick the site template which must be in zip format and you upload the template on your site. After a few minutes, if it is successful, and it tells you so, and then you click on continue. Then your site template will be listed with the other default templates. You click the radio button to make the template you installed the default template.

Then, you click on the radio button to select the default template and then you click on html to edit the html for the template page. You will be checking for the image files on the page. They usually start with the word As you can see, you need to study html and I would especially study CSS or cascading style sheets and tables so that you know how to place things on the page. In any event you need to look for the header graphic and replace it with a graphic header of your logo or a header image for your site.

You must be sure the graphic is slightly smaller than the size given so that the header graphic or logo will show up without messing up the format of the template or page. You must upload using an ftp program like Transmit or Filezilla the image file that you want to use for your logo or header image. Once you find the joomla folder in the public html folder, you must click on it to find the templates folder. Inside that there is an images folder. You must upload your chosen image to that folder. It should be a .jpg or .gif file in the same format as that used in the template if possible. Once the image shows up in the file, your next job is to change the html in the html file and replace it with the name of the image you uploaded. Then when you pull up your www.sitename/joomla your front page should show your graphic logo or header file.

Next, you need to unpublish those buttons on the front page that you don’t need. You go to the main menu section and unpublish everything but the home button. You will need to go to joomla extensions page and go to menu section and find a menu extension that will allow you to use images or other files to set up your menus. Then you will have the appropriate file extension ready when it is time to link your menus which is the last step in setting up your website.

One thing you can do now is figure out what extensions or extras you will need on your website. You can just have a straight minisite but you will do better in the search engines and in the eyes of your visitors if you have a theme based content site and not just a sales page. If you add a chat client, a forum, and a blog to your site then you will find that your visitors become involved with the site and keep returning. The more they are on your site, the greater the chance they will buy what you have to offer, be it an affiliate offer, an ebook, or a membership.

Check each section of the extensions. Especially the graphics section where all the banner advertising extensions are. You can monetize the site with banners and/or text ads that will bring additional money onto the site. It is true that if you use adsense on your site, your site will show up in the search engines sooner. There are several adsense modules. You will need to add docman or Remository if you will be setting up files for download on your site. Community builder or AEC will serve you well if you are setting up a membership site. You will need One of the wsiwyg content editors in the content and news section so that you can edit your pages easily and quickly. You must set up your wysiwyg editor as your default editor for Joomla. Then when you go to add content, you can easily and quickly edit your pages. You should go to the Blog section and add X-Blogg for editing your blog offline and download one of the blog programs for easily setting up and running a blog from your site. You will need to add one of the payment processors and/or a shopping cart for your site if you will be selling products from your site. Once you have added all the extensions, be it a component, module, or mambot you are ready to go to the next step.

Next, you will start adding the sections you will need in your site. Then you will add categories to the sections until you have divided your site into an organized entity. Then you will edit the front page using the content editor and the wysiwyg editor you have made the default content editor. You will add images and add articles so that everything is done to your satisfaction. Use Polls, banners, and the Adsense or other text ads for your affiliate programs to the front page on a rotating Banner or rotating ad schedule. That way you can track where most of your sales are coming from . Keep adding articles and other sections to your site until it is finished. Don’t forget to add sales pages for each of the products or affiliate opportunities you are promoting. Then you will add a Thank You page for any downloads you need to offer or ebooks or software. You will have to set up the extension and add any thumbnails or links you need to download products for.

Once that is all set up check all your images and your spelling for all your articles. Check your links and make sure that everything is in order. Make sure your shopping Cart is working properly by adding a sample products and ordering them. Make sure that any forms are working properly to add your visitors to your opt in list.

Add your newsletter buttons and set up your mailings. Set up your autoresponders for any orders or requests for you newsletters. I suggest you set up your newsletters in an archive section on your site so that people can download them from the site in case their email Spam filter eats your newsletter.

Once everything looks good publish your pages.

Congratulations, your site is now live. Write two articles in your area of expertise a day and you will have over 100 articles in a years time circulating all over the net earning you money. You just submit the articles to article directories and you will add a signature file mentioning your experience and your main web site. As I said, if you do this to hundreds of sites you will soon see a flood of traffic to your site and the money will follow! Joomla Greetings for the holidays!
